Your flight lands at Zadar, but your sunbed is on Pag. It is a short hop on the map and a surprisingly easy one in practice, once you know your options. Zadar Airport (Zemunik) is the closest airport to Novalja, and the trip is roughly 80 to 85 km, which most drivers cover in about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half depending on traffic and the season.
There is no single perfect way to do it. Which one suits you depends on group size, luggage, arrival time and how much faff you are willing to tolerate after a flight. Here is how the main options compare. For the bigger picture, see our guide to getting to Novalja by ferry, bridge and airport.
The route: bridge, not ferry
From the airport you join the road towards Zadar and the A1 motorway, head north-east to the Maslenica area, and cross the Pag bridge onto the island. From there the road runs along Pag and on to Novalja. You do not need a ferry on this route; the Prizna–Žigljen ferry is for people arriving from the Lika side. If the Pag bridge is closed for strong wind (the bura does this from time to time), the main road onto the island can be shut temporarily, so check conditions on arrival days with a gusty forecast.

Option 1: Rental car
Most flexible, and the best choice if you want to explore Pag, Zrće and the quieter villages. Rental desks are at the airport, and the drive is simple: motorway, then the bridge, then one main road. Book ahead for July and August, when cars run out. Parking in town and at Zrće needs some planning, so look at where you are staying first, and see our places to stay.
Option 2: Private transfer
A pre-booked transfer is the least stressful option for groups, families with luggage and late arrivals. The driver meets you at arrivals and takes you to your door. Prices differ by company, vehicle size and season, and they usually rise at peak festival times, so get a fixed quote in writing before you book rather than relying on a figure you saw somewhere else. Splitting a minivan between a group is often the cheapest per-person door-to-door option.
Option 3: Taxi or ride-hailing
Taxis wait outside arrivals, but a trip of this length is long, and metered or negotiated fares can be steep, especially in high season. Agree the price before you get in. Ride-hailing apps operate in the Zadar area, but availability for a one-way run to Novalja is not guaranteed, so do not make it your only plan if you land late at night.
Option 4: Bus via Zadar
The budget route is two legs: from the airport into Zadar bus station, then a regional bus to Novalja. Several operators serve the Zadar–Novalja line, and there are also international coaches that stop in the area. It is cheap, but it takes the longest, the timetable is thinner outside summer, and you will still need a way from Novalja bus station to your accommodation. Always check the current timetable on the operator websites and allow a generous buffer between your landing time and the last bus, because a delayed flight can leave you stranded in Zadar.

Which option for which trip?
Couple with hand luggage and a flexible schedule: bus, or a rental car if you want to roam. Group of four to eight heading to a festival: a shared minivan transfer. Family with kids and car seats: private transfer or rental car, and request child seats when booking. Arriving after dark: pre-book, because services get thin late at night.
Heading to the clubs? Check the events calendar before you book, since festival weekends are when transfers and taxis sell out first, and read our Zrće Beach guide for how to reach the strip from town.
Good to know
How long does it take? Around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by road, more with summer traffic or a stop. By public bus including the change in Zadar, plan on a good two hours or more.
Is there a direct bus from the airport to Novalja? We could not confirm a regular direct service, so plan on changing in Zadar.
Do I need a ferry? No. From Zadar you drive over the Pag bridge.
Should I pre-book? In July and August and on festival weekends, yes, whatever option you choose. Always confirm prices and timetables directly with the provider for your travel dates.
